You've found a perfume you love, spent good money on it, and applied it carefully — only to find it's faded within two hours. Sound familiar? Fragrance longevity is one of the most common complaints perfume lovers have, and the good news is that most of the fixes are simple.
Here's everything you need to know about making your perfume last longer — from application techniques to product layering to storage tips. Browse our Perfume collection to find long-lasting fragrances you'll love.
Why Does Perfume Fade So Quickly?
Before we fix the problem, it helps to understand why it happens. Fragrance longevity is affected by several factors:
- Skin type: Dry skin absorbs fragrance faster and holds it less well than oily skin
- Concentration: Eau de Cologne fades in 2 hours; Extrait de Parfum can last 12+
- Application technique: Rubbing your wrists together breaks down fragrance molecules
- Environment: Heat, humidity, and sweat all affect how long a scent lasts
- The fragrance itself: Fresh, citrusy top-note-heavy scents naturally fade faster than deep, resinous base notes
1. Moisturise Before You Spray
This is the single most effective tip for making perfume last longer. Fragrance clings to moisture — dry skin absorbs it and it disappears. Oily or moisturised skin holds it on the surface where you can smell it.
Apply an unscented body lotion to your pulse points 5–10 minutes before applying your perfume. The lotion creates a slightly tacky layer that the fragrance clings to, dramatically extending longevity.

2. Layer Your Fragrance
Fragrance layering — using multiple scented products from the same fragrance line or in complementary scents — builds up a fragrant base on your skin that lasts far longer than any single product alone.
The layering order:
- Shower with a scented body wash
- Apply a matching or complementary body lotion
- Spritz a body mist all over
- Finish with your eau de parfum on pulse points
Each layer reinforces the next, creating a long-lasting fragrance bubble around you. Browse our Body Spray & Mist and Soap & Body Wash collections to build your layering routine.
3. Apply to Pulse Points
Pulse points are areas where blood vessels sit close to the surface of the skin, generating heat that warms and diffuses fragrance. The main ones are:
- Inner wrists
- Neck (sides and base)
- Behind the ears
- Inside the elbows
- Behind the knees
- Ankles and inner calves
Don't spray everywhere at once — choose two or three pulse points and apply there. The lower points (knees, ankles) are especially effective because fragrance rises with body heat throughout the day.
4. Don't Rub Your Wrists Together
This is one of the most common fragrance mistakes. Rubbing your wrists after applying perfume generates heat and friction that breaks down the fragrance molecules, causing the top notes to evaporate faster and the overall scent to fade more quickly.
Instead: spray, then let it dry naturally. That's all you need to do.
5. Spray on Your Hair
Hair holds fragrance beautifully — often better than skin. A light spritz on your hair or a spritz in the air that you walk through leaves a subtle, long-lasting fragrance trail that people will notice as you move.
Note: Alcohol-based fragrances can dry out hair with repeated use. For hair application, a body mist or hair perfume is a gentler option. Browse our Body Spray & Mist collection.
6. Spray on Your Clothes
Fabric holds fragrance longer than skin — sometimes for days. A light spritz on the inside of your collar, the lining of your coat, or the hem of your dress will keep you smelling amazing long after a skin application would have faded.
Note: Test on an inconspicuous area first, as some fragrances can stain delicate fabrics. Spray from a distance of at least 30cm.
7. Choose the Right Concentration
If longevity is consistently an issue, it may be time to step up your fragrance concentration. Here's a quick reminder of the hierarchy:
- Body Mist: 1–2 hours
- Eau de Cologne: 2–3 hours
- Eau de Toilette: 3–5 hours
- Eau de Parfum: 6–8 hours
- Extrait de Parfum: 8–12+ hours
For all-day longevity without reapplying, an Eau de Parfum or Extrait is your best bet. Our MFK Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait de Parfum and Parfums de Marly Valaya Exclusif Extrait are among the longest-lasting fragrances we carry.
8. Store Your Perfume Correctly
Heat, light, and humidity are the enemies of fragrance. They break down the molecules over time, causing your perfume to fade faster and change character. Always store perfume:
- Away from direct sunlight
- Away from heat sources (not on a sunny windowsill or near a radiator)
- In a cool, dry place — a drawer or cabinet is ideal
- In its original bottle with the cap on
A beautiful makeup vanity with drawers is the perfect place to store your fragrance collection. Our Wood Makeup Vanity Table Set with Detachable Mirror and 4 Drawers keeps your beauty essentials organised and your fragrances protected.
9. Apply Right After Showering
Your pores are open and your skin is warm and slightly damp right after a shower — the ideal conditions for fragrance absorption. Apply your body lotion while your skin is damp, then follow with your perfume for maximum staying power.
10. Reapply Strategically
Even with all these tips, some fragrances — especially light florals and fresh aquatics — will need a mid-day refresh. Keep a travel-size bottle in your bag, or decant a small amount into a refillable atomiser. A quick two-second spritz on your wrists or collar at lunchtime is all you need.
